What is the Study Journal?
The Study Journal is a productivity tool for Elite students.
It combines several elements into a cohesive suite. It helps you study more effectively and efficiently as well as bringing structure and motivation into your study habits. You’ll have transparency over how much you studied in subject X, how much time you spend studying on sundays, and how much much time you spend creating summaries.
The Study Journal is much more than simple time tracking.
With a powerful dashboard with analytics features and insightful graphs, you’ll actually gain insights about your study habits. Motivational tools will help you keep studying when the going gets tough. And with the target time system you’ll be able to manage your time more efficiently.
How much time do you actually spend studying in a semester? And how much time will you study this semester if you study 3 hours every day now? How much time do you spend writing summaries? How much time do you have left to study this semester?
The Study Journal helps you find answers to all those questions.
Dashboard & analytics
How about an overview of all the studying you did this semester in a beautifully-designed dashboard with graphs and several insights. How about a view of all the days of the semester with their peaks and valleys in studying. How about seeing which day of the week is the most productive day?
The Study Journal helps you answer these questions ever so easily.
How about data-driven tools that keep you motivated? How about no longer having to rely on caffeine and cheap motivational videos from Youtube. How about a system that triggers your intrinsic motivation. How about gamification in your learning?
The Study Journal does help you achieve all of the above.
Who is behind the Study Journal?
Hi there! My name is Lukas von Hohnhorst. As of now, I’m about to finish my Master in Management degree at the university of Mannheim.
I’m currently doing an internship at Bain & Company in Munich. I’ve worked for different consulting companies like A.T. Kearney, the car manufacturer Daimler, and a Berlin-based startup.
During the Fall semester of 2014, I developed the Study Journal for myself to improve my study habits. Over the course of the last four years, I honed and improved the tool—making use of the Excel modeling skills gained in my internships.
I’ve used the Study Journal for both my undergraduate and graduate studies as well as my two semesters abroad. I introduced it to the German market in late 2017. Now, I’m offering a completely re-coded version of the Study Journal—which is available in English for the first time!
Features that make the Study Journal unique
The study sessions sheet is used to enter every single study session. This will help you keep yourself accountable. The data entered here is used to compute the dashboard and other features.
Up to 10 courses
The dashboard gives you a quick glance at your study progress. You’ll see key insights that will help you improve your study habits. The beautiful design makes it a delight to look at the graphs. And it will make you want them to rise even higher which can only be achieved by studying more.
Days of the semester
The days of the semester sheet gives you an overlook over all the days of the current semester. You can define target study times and see all the medals you’re being awarded by hitting certain thresholds.

Frequently asked questions
What type of software do I need?
As of now, the English version of the Study Journal is only available as an easy-to-use Microsoft Excel file. The (old) German version is also available as an Apple Numbers file. However, as Numbers is rather limited with regards to special features, I decided to focus on the Excel version and put all my work into it to make it the best it can be!
The minimum Excel version should be Excel 2007. To ensure safety and compatibility, the Study Journal does not include any Macros. The Study Journal works both on Apple MacOS and Microsoft Windows.
Do I need to be an Excel pro to use the Study Journal?
No! The Study Journal is very easy to use. The included PDF User’s Manual will help you with detailed information and an easy-to-use step by step guide to get started.
How can I configure the Study Journal?
